Pinewood Derby Rules and Regulations For All Classes (Specific rules for each division to follow)

  • Each builder can enter as many cars as he likes in any class.
  • You can use any car that you have built over the years as long as they meet the race requirements.
  • Cars are staged straight down the lane and the wheels pulled away from the center rail and body of the car unless different instructions are included with the car in the shipping box.
  • Entrants that are live stage their own cars.
  • No running, touching, or stepping over the track.
  • No touching any ones car. (other than to stage own car)
  • Must conduct yourself in an orderly manner.

Height : Not to exceed 2-3/4" inches ( 7cm )
Length : Not to exceed 7" inches ( 17.8 cm )
Weight : Not to exceed 5 ounces ( 142 grams )
Width : Not to exceed 2 3/4" inches ( 7 cm )
Center Rail Height : 1/4" inch ( 7mm ) *
Center Rail Width : 1 5/8" inches (4.2 cm) *
* Center Rail height and width are the actual measurements of the track, so you must build the car to clear these dimensions for the wheels to ride on the track, outside of the rails, the car must not ride on the inside of the rails.
The main part of the body must be made of Pinewood.  Additional materials maybe added as long as they meet the race requirements.

The following Modifications are Forbidden in all classes

You can not use...

  • Springs
  • Magnets
  • Starting or finish line devices or propellants, all cars must be gravity propelled
  • Electronic or lighting devices
  • Glass or extremely fragile parts
  • Paint that rubs off, smudges or extremely sticky
  • Loose objects on car
  • Moving weights or parts (other than the wheels)
  •  Bushings, Bearings or Inserts
  • Sharp objects on the bottom of car. (We do not want any damage to the rubber stopping pads)
  • Any part of the car to go beyond the starting peg
  • Sticky substances or anything on the car to aid with the starting peg
  • Axles and wheels must not be attached to any device that mechanically or other wise alters rotation and spin

**Race Requirements For BSA Pinewood Derby Class including ROOKIE Class **

Wheelbase
*Any wheel base is allowed.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size .084 - .096 are only allowed.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
*Only use of official BSA kits wheels are allowed.  BSA colored wheels are allowed.  The new 2010 version of BSA wheels are allowed.
*Wheels may be sanded and polished or lathed to remove mold casting burs and surface imperfections, to true the roundness of the wheel and to flatten the tread/contact surface.
* The tread/contact surface of the wheel must be as flat as humanly possible and parallel to the wheel bore and must remain stock width.
* Wheels are allowed to run canted by means of angling the axles.
*The wheel must remain stock appearing with all markings intact.
* The small detailed marks on the edge of the wheels must still remain visible around the entire circumference.
* Truing and polishing the wheel bore, and coning the wheel hub is allowed.
*Car must have at least 4 wheels and 4 axles attached 2 on each side directly across from each other.  No wheels can be mounted on the top or bottom of the car.
*Only 3 wheels are required to touch the track.
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.
*You may add materials to the inside of the wheel to aid wheel balance. (examples: drops of glue, paint or some tape...)
*Hubcap stickers and any material used to cover up the inside of the wheel is not allowed except for the raised wheel if applicable.  The inside of the wheel must be visible for inspection.


**Race Requirements For Awana Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Class**

Wheelbase
*Any wheel base is allowed.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size, .084 - .096 are only allowed.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
*Only use of official Awana kits wheels are allowed.
*Wheels may be sanded and polished or lathed to remove mold casting burs and surface imperfections, to true the roundness of the wheel and to flatten the tread/contact surface.
* The wheels may be modified but must appear stock from the outside.
* The tread/contact surface of the wheel must be as flat as humanly possible and parallel to the wheel bore and must remain stock width.
* Wheels are allowed to run canted by means of angling the axles.
* Truing and polishing the wheel bore, and coning the wheel hub is allowed.
*No drilling additional holes into any other part of the wheel.
* Car must have at least 4 wheels and 4 axles attached 2 on each side directly across from each other.  No wheels can be mounted on the top or bottom of the car.
*Only 3 wheels are required to touch the track.
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.
*You may add materials to the inside of the wheel to aid wheel balance. (examples: drops of glue, paint or some tape...)


**Race Requirements For PRO Class**

Wheelbase
*Any wheel base is allowed.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size .084 - .096 are only allowed with the exception of Royal Ranger screws.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
* All wheel modifications are allowed except wheel bore inserts!
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.

JANUARY SPECIALTY CLASS RULES

**Race Requirements For Royal Pinewood Derby Class**

All cars using the official Royal Ranger kit can be 7.5" inches long and weigh up to 5.5 ounces and use the existing axle wheelbase location.  The cars using the other royal class wheels must maintain the general rules outlined above.

Wheelbase
*Any wheel base is allowed.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size .084 - .096 are only allowed for Royal Ambassador, and .084 - .120 for Royal Ranger.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
*Only use of official Royal Ranger or Royal Ambassador (including Royal Racer) kits wheels are allowed.
*Wheels may be sanded and polished or lathed to remove mold casting burs and surface imperfections, to true the roundness of the wheel and the tread/contact surface.
* Wheels must remain stock appearing and retain lettering and markings.
* Truing and polishing the axle holes, and coning the wheel hub is allowed.
*No drilling additional holes into any other part of the wheel.
* Car must have at least 4 wheels and 4 axles attached 2 on each side directly across from each other.  No wheels can be mounted on the top or bottom of the car.
*Only 3 wheels are required to touch the track.
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.
*You may add materials to the wheel to aid wheel balance. (examples: drops of glue, paint or some tape...)



FEBRUARY SPECIALTY CLASS RULES

**Race Requirements For Needle Class**

Wheelbase
*Any wheel base is allowed.

 Axles
* Any type of axle is allowed as long as it meets general race requirements.
 
Wheels

*Wheels may be Sanded, Polished, Machined, CnC'ed or any other method used to make a set and/or purchase a set of your choice as long as they meet the race requirments.
* Wheels must have a diameter no greater than 31mm's.
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.


MARCH SPECIALTY CLASS RULES

**Race Requirements For 4 On The Floor Class**

Wheelbase
*Pure Stock BSA Kit wheelbase only.  Wheelbase can't be repositioned forward or backward.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.
*All 4 wheels must make contact and spin when the car rolls.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size .084 - .096 are only allowed.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels

*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
*Wheels may be sanded, polished, Machined, CnC'd or any other method used to
make a set and/or purchase a set of your choice as long as they meet the race
requirments.
* The tread/contact surface of the wheel must be as flat as humanly possible and parallel to the wheel bore and must remain stock width.
* Wheels are allowed to run canted by means of angling the axles.
*Only 3 wheels are required on the car.
*No part of the wheel that comes in contact with the track be painted.
*Wheels must be at least 7.5mm wide and 31mm tall.
*Other machined wheels like the Derby Worx wheel are legal as long as they keep the general width and height requirements.



MAY SPECIALTY CLASS RULES

**Race Requirements For RUNT Class**

The car can be no longer than 4".  The rest of the general rules still apply.
Wheelbase

*Any wheel base is allowed.
*Original Axel slots and/or drilled holes are allowed.

 Axles
* Axles, must remain the stock size .084 - .096 are only allowed.
*Aftermarket Axles are allowed. As long as they meet the diameter requirements.
*Axles may be polished or reshaped to allow for faster wheel spin but must remain to the race requirements.
*No bushing, bearings, sleeves, inserts attached to the wheels, Axles or the body in anyway.
*No one piece rod Axle types.

 Wheels
